Dear supporter,

Snow in the higher elevations, and consistent rain in the lower elevations. More water. The fish love it. It is great that fall is finally feeling like fall. October was a blur, marked by a Steelhead clinic and broodstock collection in Troy in the middle of the month. We had 22 folks join Steelheader and ODFW staff and volunteer instructors for a multi day collection, the 101 clinic and fun times in and along the banks of the Grande Rhonde River. Steelhead were caught, salmon were caught, and it was great to fish in the sunny, redwalled canyon. Cool to see Fish Eggs to Fry launch again this year, and this time led by our AmeriCorps Staff Grace!

Steelhead board leaders and myself have been getting items for the upcoming end of the year online auction from longtime and new supporters. We are putting it all together in the coming weeks and we will launch on November 15th. Please read more about it in the newsletter and stay tuned.

There’s another Steelhead Clinic on February 11th, this time on the Sandy, and perfect timing for those who want to land their first steelhead in the 2023 winter run. Tons more coming your way with the auction, other ways to help strengthen the organization, and a surprise to two. Stay tuned, and enjoy the fall colors!

Join Us for Our Virtual Auction!

We are excited to announce that we will be holding our 2022 virtual auction starting November 15th. From the very beginning, the Northwest Steelheaders have been at the forefront of angling advocacy in the Pacific Northwest. Our theme, Reeling in the Year, once again invites a deeper look into what we have achieved through our work advocating for accessible and abundant fisheries.

Our accomplishments wouldn't be possible without your continued support. With your help, we’ve been able to champion bills that have increased angling access, advocate for salmon and steelhead restoration garnering national attention, and it doesn't stop there.

Restoration of our salmon and steelhead populations in the Pacific Northwest is our top priority. Moving forward, we will continue to build from our accomplishments to bring ample fishing opportunities back to the Northwest. With your continued support, we can carry on fighting for lasting protections of salmon and steelhead. We hope you’ll join us as we “Reel in the Year” through our Virtual Auction, registration opens November 7th and bidding will open on Tuesday, November 15th. We can’t wait to see you there!

This year the Northwest Steelheaders are taking part in the Giving Tuesday fundraiser! Giving Tuesday is November 29th, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. This international day of giving is one of the highest-volume days for nonprofit donations all year. We're hoping to raise $10,000 through this giving event to help us create updated, as well as brand-new, fishing events and programs for our members.

Unlike many of our other fundraisers, you have the ability to get involved! By clicking on the "Fundraise" button on the Northwest Steelheaders Giving Tuesday page, you can create your own peer-to-peer fundraiser! That might sound daunting, but we've already put together a template for you to use that's ready to go. All you have to do is publish the fundraiser. By creating your own fundraiser, you can share it with friends to have an even greater impact than you would have by just donating yourself. When you have a fundraiser that's raising a lo is ahead of the pack. If that doesn't sound like something you want to do, you can easily forward the link to our page to your friends and family instead.

We have some really exciting opportunities on the horizon, and we're eager to launch them. Consider creating a fundraiser or making a donation to help us get them up and running.

Free Fishing Days Are Coming Up

The next Free Fishing Weekend will be November 25th and 26th, the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving. On Free Fishing Weekends, you don’t need a license to fish, crab or clam anywhere in Oregon. There’s no license, no tag, and no endorsement needed either. Opportunities like these are a great way to get your friends and family out on the water together.

If you're not sure how to plan a family fishing day, ODFW has some good resources to help you choose where to fish and helpful tips on how to fish for trout. Visit the link below for more information on upcoming the free fishing weekend and how to plan your weekend.

Fish Eggs to Fry Delivery Day

What does it take to get 18,000 spring Chinook salmon eggs delivered to 90 classrooms in just two days? A lot of dedication and determination!

On October 25th and 26th, Steelheaders from Tualatin Valley and Sandy River chapters volunteered with the National Wildlife Federation and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, alongside folks from Clackamas River Trout Unlimited, Get Hooked Foundation, and Confluence Environmental Center, to deliver salmon eggs with Fish Eggs to Fry. This program allows volunteers to invest in the next generation of salmon stewards by contributing to hands-on conservation science training in the classroom. Egg Delivery Day was made possible by the exceptional commitment and energy of Steelheaders like LeRoy Schultz of Tualatin Valley, who coordinated delivery to 40 schools!
